NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of our Foundations Health facilities in different roles. Whether working in housekeeping or as a nursing assistant, he sees firsthand how we embody the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."

The Plains, Ohio -
I spent the day at Hickory Creek of Athens, our 114-bed facility in The Plains, Ohio, just outside of Athens. I worked alongside their rehab unit team amidst these uncertain times with the Coronavirus. Dreama Pickens is the RN and Unit Manager for the Rehab Unit. Donna Phillips and Annie Young are the STNA's. The three of them were absolutely magical. They complimented each other extremely well and all three of them had a love and pride for their unit.

Once we had a moment to chat, I asked the three of them what they thought about the Coronavirus and if there were worried being on the front line. All three of them said without any hesitation, of course, but that's what we do. They talked about how they worried about bringing anything home to their loved ones and also were just as worried about bringing anything into the facility. They said they basically go from work to home and back and no place else that's not necessary. They talked about once they got home, they undressed, showered, and washed their clothes first thing. Their families are everything to them. Working alongside them in action was amazing. They loved and cared for their residents and put themselves in harm's way because it's who they are.

Amid everything, life goes on. There was a resident move on the schedule to create a protected area within the facility in case they had to quarantine above and beyond what they are currently doing. Once the time of the move was coordinated, there was an army of employees there to assist. I'm not kidding you, ten people from all departments were there and the move was done in 15 minutes. It was amazing!

After a while, we took 15 and went to the breakroom. While there, everyone was talking and laughing and sharing. I was blown away by the energy, optimism, and comradery. I was trying to buy a pop and I couldn't get the credit card reader to work. One of the care team members noticed my struggle and asked if I needed a dollar. Not if I need to borrow a dollar but if I needed a dollar. I told her I felt like a heel, but I didn't have any cash on me. She insisted and gave me a dollar to get a drink. As we talked, I got to know Missy Arrington. Missy has worked at Hickory Creek of Athens for 28 years in the dietary department. Missy told me about how amazing the team is at Hickory Creek and she felt it has a lot to do with Chelsea Holsinger, the administrator.

You are goodness and mercy and compassion and understanding. You are peace and joy and light. You are forgiveness and patience, strength and courage, a helper in time of need, a comforter in time of sorrow, a healer in time of injury, a teacher in times of confusion. You are the deepest wisdom and the highest truth; the greatest peace and the grandest love. You are these things. And in moments of your life you have known yourself to be these things. Choose now to know yourself as these things always.

Neale Donald Walsch

The best of who we are is brought out in the toughest times. I'm proud to tell you that I witnessed goodness and mercy and compassion and understating at Hickory Creek! They are an amazing team and they are these things!
